LÅngdal SummaryThe Långdal project is located immediately to the north east of the now exhausted Långdal mine, mined for its high zinc and silver grades until 1992. The area is located approximately 7 km south west of Boliden in the eastern segment of the Skellefte district. The area along the surface expression of the contact between the sedimentary and volcanic units reaching from the town of Boliden to the old Långdal mine is a highly prospective target for massive sulphides containing base metals. Exploration update Boliden Area 2012 » Exploration 2009-2011 Wiking Mineral has explored for deep ore bodies along the Boliden-Långdal contact since 2006 and in 2010 a 1227m hole was completed 700m east of the old mine. This hole was designed to test a parallel zone to the old mine sequence and a strong conductor was found south of the hole, at about 900m depth when surveyed with down-hole EM equipment. This conductor is targeted for drilling during 2011. GeologyThe geology in the area consists of the old Långdal mine sequence to the west, comprised of a wide alteration envelope with silicification and sericite alteration in metavolcanic rocks. East of this follows a series of relatively unaltered dacite and andesite units that form the contact to the sediments in the east. The sediments range from schists, black schists and biotitic siltstones to sandstones, turbidites and mudflows. Generally the grain size is coarser toward the volcanic contact. Historic figuresThe now exhausted Långdal mine contained 4,4M ton with 5,8% zinc, 1,7% lead, 0,1 % copper, 149 g/t silver and 1,9 g/t gold. |
